Online annual tax returns must be submitted by 31/1/20 to avoid a fine
The deadline for completing a paper annual tax return for the year 6th April 2018 to 5th April 2019 was 31st October 2019. If you missed this deadline, you will need to submit your annual tax return online. To avoid HMRC imposing fines, you need to file online by the 31st January 2020 deadline. If you did not file your annual tax return online last year, you will need to allow extra time as you will need to register with HMRC first.
What penalties do HMRC charge for filing an annual tax return after the 31st January deadline?
HMRC will apply penalties if you miss the deadline or pay your tax bill late. Penalty fines start at £100 for a late return that is filed up to 3 months late. You will also be charged interest on late payments. Remember that penalty charges and interest will increase the later you file.
